Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo

The first writer of any importance in the entire West was General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. The bulk of his writing consisted of official and social correspondence and many public documents. General Vallejo was virtually a self-educated man, his early education being limited to the mission school at Monterey. But he was a man of superio intellect. Of him, HH Bancroft says "General Vallejo, one of the most prominent and englightened of Califonians, was always a collector of such documents as might aid in recording the history of his country. As a contributor to the stock of original information respecting his country's annals, General Vallejo must ever stand without a rival."
